This year, 16-year-old Ciara Cahoon has cemented her reputation as one of the sport’s rising stars with a history-making victory at the Aintree Championship in May, when she battled it out to become the first ever female to win a 600cc Supersport race.
During that Merseyside meeting, she also became the first female to win the Carole Fairclough Memorial Race, and her performances were good enough to secure a third place in the overall 600cc Supersport Standings – all while relying on the performance of Zerofit Baselayers and Leggings.
Born in South Africa’s Cape Town, Ciara emigrated to Carlow, Ireland with her racing-loving parents Darrin and Trudy in 2013, and it wasn’t long before the bug bit for the youngster, too.
‘I grew up around motorcycles as both of my parents and their friends were into
motorcycle racing, track days and motocross,’ she said,
‘When I was eight years old, I asked for a Motocross bike for Christmas and learnt to ride around the farm fields, which quickly led to competing in grass track events.
‘I thoroughly enjoyed the sport because of the adrenaline rush and realised that I was fairly decent at riding competitively. Once I had changed from grass to tarmac there was no turning back – the speed of the track and the skills I needed to develop took it up to another level for me in terms of excitement,’ added Ciara, who counts fellow Zerofit athlete Glenn Irwin as one of her biggest influences, alongside Valentino Rossi, Tayla Collins and Jake Dixon.
Ciara’s pace on the track is matched by the pace of her achievements. Victory in the Open Grasstrack Championship in the KTM 85cc Small Wheel was followed by a second place in the Southern Centre Championship, both in 2022.
The following year she won the Two Stroke Junior Elite 65cc in the acclaimed Irish Minibike Championship, finishing second in the same competition in 2024 while also recording a highly credible sixth in the Moto1 Ulster Superbike (USBK) Championship.
Ciara went one better in 2025 and also finished sixth in the Moto3 USBK Championship before her outstanding achievements in 2026 at Aintree.
And when she’s not setting the pace on two wheels, she can be found leading the line for St. Pats AFC, scoring goals and maintaining her fitness away from the paddock, as well as following a strict regime set by fitness coach Paul Ward.
‘I’ll train from 5.30am and be back home for 7am, before school at 8am. Then it’s back in the gym or doing other fitness work for 45 minutes, three nights a week, as well as football training on top of that,’ she said.
Under the guidance of Team Manager John Wilkinson, Ciara continues on her athlete journey in 2027 and will spend the off-season preparing to compete once more in the USBK Championship while returning to Aintree next summer and also racing at the North Gloucestershire Championship.
