Zerofit’s Louis Ludik retires from rugby
Zerofit ambassador Louis Ludik has announced his retirement from professional rugby, swapping blitz defence for business and boerewors.
In 2018, South African Ludik – along with former Ulster team-mate Schalk van der Merwe – founded HELLBENTwhich combines lean Irish beef in the form of boerewors (coiled sausage), burgers and meatballs with a 100-year-old spice recipe from the players’ Rainbow nation homeland.
And while the player will no longer be benefiting from Zerofit baselayers in a playing capacity, he has found the Heatrub Ultimate to be perfect for the many hours he’s spent outside in freezing conditions during the winter and even spring months, meeting farmers and also suppliers as HELLBENT continues to grow.
‘When I was playing, the Heatrub Move was absolutely ideal and I recommended the company and the product to some of the Ulster players too, but if you’re an outdoors sort of person both that product and the Ultimate are game changers,’ said Ludik, who hangs up his boots with 112 appearances to his name for the Ulster Men, following successful spells playing for the Golden Lions and the Sharks in South Africa, as well as with Agen in France.
After three years of developing the HELLBENT business model, taste-testing and incorporating the recipe fusion, Louis was offered the chance to stock HELLBENT products in a leading supermarket through the ‘Grow with ALDI’ programme, with the carrot of a one-year contract the prize for sales success.
The audition couldn’t have gone better – HELLBENT sold out inside 24 hours and duly nailed down that 12-month contract, with produce flying off the shelves of the Northern Irish retailer. HELLBENT has since become available in ALDI in Scotland, as well as all branches of Sainsbury’s in Northern Ireland.
‘It all started when Schalk had cooked some sausages for his son’s birthday party, and they were amazing. Our wives joked that we should start a business – and here we are! It’s been an amazing journey; we’ve learned so much and it’s been incredibly humbling to see the results and hear so many positive comments about the food from the locals’ said Ludik.
‘I am thankful to Zerofit for continuing to support me even now I’ve retired, and if anything, I’ll be able to feel the benefits of the products more than when I was playing,’ he added.
